Although it is common among very traditional Asian families to want their children to grow up to be Lawyers, Engineers, Accountants or Doctors, many parents are happy with their children pursuing any career in which they can feel happy and fulfilled. More Asian Pacific American (APA) young people are pursuing teaching careers because they realize how important it is for APA children to have teachers that look like them and understand their culture. The same applies to African American and Latino students. The research clearly shows the importance of role models. For APA teachers they realize the critical role they have with non-APA students in being positive, non-stereotyped role models. I resist the argument that people of color seek jobs other than teaching, in order to earn more money. Most teachers do not enter the profession to get rich. A desire to inspire the next generation is much stronger. This article is very inspiring.
