Title IX Coordinator Life: Part 1 – Who Are Your Constituents?
Many years ago, working with the Feminist Majority Foundation, I conducted a national survey attempting to find out who were the State Education Agency (SEA) Title IX Coordinators. An interesting finding was that many of the people in this role also held the position of SEA attorney. In K-12 schools it is not uncommon that the superintendent, school attorney, business manager, or head of human resources also acts as the Title IX Coordinator. This is a bad idea.

Training is available, but much of it pertains to the interpretation of the law instead of explaining how to do the job. Part 1 of this series, “Who Are Your Constituents?” helped frame the role. Let’s Not Pretend We’re Colorblind
Many well-meaning people talk about being colorblind or proudly claim that they are raising their children to ignore racial or other differences. I know they are sincere when they say those words, but I cringe each time I hear them. What are meant as good intentions can also have the opposite effect. For some, the term “colorblind” is heard as “I will pretend you are white and you pretend you are white and we will get along fine.”
