Asian Canadians are facing ongoing mistreatment and harassment

A recent poll reveals that Asian Canadians are facing ongoing mistreatment and harassment, primarily driven by political tensions and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey, which included 884 Asian Canadians from various backgrounds and 1,625 Canadians from other backgrounds, indicates that the mistreatment of Asian Canadians persists despite a decrease in COVID-19-related tensions. The strained relationship between Canada and China, characterized by trade disputes and political conflicts, appears to contribute to the poor treatment of Asian Canadians. Around 20% of Chinese and East Asian Canadians reported regularly experiencing negative reactions from other Canadians due to political tensions. The survey also highlights an increase in mistreatment of Asian Canadians compared to a similar poll conducted in 2021, particularly among Chinese Canadians, who faced name-calling, insults, threats, intimidation and physical attacks by strangers more frequently in 2023.

South Asian Canadians reported the highest level of abuse or discrimination. Asian Canadians also expressed a higher level of concern about discrimination within their own communities compared to the general population. The poll data was weighted to reflect census demographics, and the majority of Asian Canadians do not report negative experiences to the police.
